Anna & David’s Wedding at Horton Grange, Northumberland


Anna and David’s wedding at Horton Grange in Northumberland was a relaxed and elegant celebration filled with genuine emotion, laughter and plenty of thoughtful personal touches. I’m based in the Peak District, but I photograph weddings all over the UK, and I've had the pleasure of travelling up to the North East for weddings like this one. Horton Grange was a brilliant setting for Anna and David’s day, a Georgian country house surrounded by gardens and countryside, with plenty of character without ever feeling overly formal. For me, the venue is always part of the story, but it isn't the whole story.


The people are what make the wedding.

The morning began with Anna getting ready at Horton Grange alongside her bridal party. There was a lovely mixture of excitement, nerves and laughter as everyone prepared for the ceremony and the day ahead. These quieter moments are often some of my favourites to photograph because nobody is thinking too much about the camera. Everyone is simply getting ready and enjoying being together. David was getting ready nearby with his groomsmen and friends, enjoying a more relaxed start to the morning before the two sides of the wedding came together. When the ceremony arrived, the atmosphere changed. Anna and David exchanged their vows surrounded by their closest family and friends, with plenty of emotion and some very happy faces watching on. This is the sort of thing I love about documentary wedding photography. I'm not only looking at the couple — I'm watching everything happening around them. The reactions during the vows, the smiles between guests, the laughter and those little moments that happen without anyone realising they're being photographed.


After the ceremony, everyone had time to relax and enjoy the surroundings of Horton Grange. Drinks, conversations and hugs replaced the nerves of the morning, and Anna and David could finally take a breath and enjoy being married. We took care of the family photographs they wanted before spending a little time outside for photographs of the two of them. Horton Grange is a fantastic wedding venue for photography. The Georgian architecture, gardens, mature trees and surrounding countryside give plenty of variety without needing to take the couple away from their guests for ages. Anna and David wanted their portraits to feel relaxed rather than heavily posed, so we kept things simple. A little direction when needed, but mostly giving them the space to talk, laugh and enjoy a few minutes together. As the afternoon moved towards evening, the light became softer and warmer around the grounds. We stepped outside again for a few photographs as the light changed, before heading back to the celebrations. By this point, the formal parts of the day were behind them. Everyone had relaxed, the nerves had disappeared and the party was getting properly underway. That's what I love about photographing weddings. The photographs aren't just about making the venue look beautiful. They're about remembering who was there, what happened and how the day actually felt. Anna and David’s wedding at Horton Grange was a brilliant example of that. Elegant without being stuffy, relaxed without losing any of the occasion, and full of the people and moments that made it completely theirs.

We can't thank Pete enough for everything he did on our wedding day. From start to finish, he was professional, organised, and made everyone feel completely at ease. He captured every moment naturally, kept the day running smoothly, and somehow managed to round everyone up for the photos without any stress.
